Week one, reading. The Inmates are Running the Asylum by Alan Cooper

This reading talks about how computers are invading our lives and controlling us rather than us controlling them. The 'business executives' are letting programmers and engineers take control and produce products and processes that in their rush to embrace and take advantage of the silicone chip, forget to allow for ease of use. People get frustrated using these complex products which don't allow for the 'average' person to use. They design for use by someone with no human error. Instead of worrying about a complex and amazing interface, they need to focus on the interaction that the user has with the product.

Customer loyalty dissapears if they come accross and infuriating design and it's simply helping nobody to continue to design in such a way.

Amen, brother.
I love this. The amount of times that you come accross a product that is impossible to use is far too high, and the inadvertant rage that you feel towards the company is insane! Why can't we simple calm down. slow down and take time to design with pure human interaction as priority?
